Modi launches STEP scheme to train Maharashtra youth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched the Chief Minister’s Short-Term Employability Program in Maharashtra to train young people in industry-relevant and job-oriented skills. The state Department of Skill, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation will run the initiative, targeting 75,000 trainees this year and about 100,000 from next year.

Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha said the inauguration took place at 600 locations across the state, where artisans from the Vishwakarma community and traditional experts were honored as chief guests. The program will commence with 2,506 units across 419 government industrial training institutes and 141 technical schools, enabling local management committees to tailor the courses to district needs.

Lodha said the scheme aims to make youth self-reliant and create self-employment opportunities for women and rural candidates through skill development. Admissions will be conducted online, and training fees will range from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 per month.

Approximately 25 percent of the seats are reserved for institute trainees, while the remaining seats are open to external applicants. Eligible participants include students of ITIs and those pursuing 10th, 12th, diploma, or degree programs. The curriculum encompasses emerging technologies, including electric vehicles, drones, solar energy, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. Special batches are planned for women and emerging sectors, with training centers set up in Gadchiroli, Latur, Nagpur, and Amravati.
