Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud opened the new Reconnaissance and Intelligence Command headquarters for the national armed forces in Mogadishu. Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, State Minister Omar Ali Abdi, and Chief of Defence Forces General Odowa Yusuf Rage attended the ceremony with senior military officers. The facility will boost intelligence gathering and analysis capabilities against Al-Shabaab and other threats. Security reforms advance as the African Union Transition Mission prepares to end operations by late 2024. Mohamud emphasized that modern intelligence systems have contributed to recent battlefield victories.
Military briefings at the Defence Ministry highlighted successful operations in the Galguduud and Lower Shabelle regions. Government forces, with local militias, captured strategic villages and disrupted militant supply networks during the second offensive phase. These areas serve as important Al-Shabaab strongholds and funding sources for terrorist activities. Somalia maintains partnerships with the African Union, the United States, and Turkey for training and equipment support. Strong reconnaissance capabilities will help prevent the resurgence of extremism after international forces withdraw.
