Mombasa Road shuts Sunday for the AIDS Day half-marathon, plan routes

Authorities will shut down part of Mombasa Road for several hours as the capital hosts a half-marathon marking World AIDS Day. The Kenya National Highways Authority announced the closure between Nyayo National Stadium Roundabout and Museum Hill Interchange will run from early morning until mid-morning, urging drivers to use alternate routes and follow directions from traffic marshals.

The Health Ministry is organizing the event through the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council with support from county governments and civil society organizations. Races ranging from two kilometers for children to 21 kilometers for experienced runners will take place at Nyayo National Stadium under the banner of ending AIDS among adolescents and young people.

Counties across Kenya will stage complementary activities such as wellness walks, health screenings, and HIV counseling services. Medical Services Principal Secretary Ouma Oluga emphasized the event advances national efforts to eliminate AIDS-related deaths by 2030 while addressing teenage pregnancy and gender violence affecting youth aged 15 to 24.
