Mozambicans Flee to Malawi Amid Election Tensions

People are running away from Mozambique. They're heading to Senior Chief Tengani's area in Nsanje. This is happening because of fights about who won the election.

The country's top court said on Monday that Daniel Chapo will be president. He's from the Frelimo party. The judges said he got 65% of the votes, not 70% as first reported.

One person who ran away is Grasa Antonio. She came from Postal Chire. She says there's a shooting between two groups - Frelimo and Renamo. Antonio thinks the October voting started all the trouble. The people who lost said they wouldn't accept what happened.

"We ran to Malawi before things got worse," Antonio told others. "We could only bring what we could carry."

Senior Chief Tengani says these people from Mozambique are indeed in his area. He shared that government workers and the Area Civil Protection Committee are checking things out. More people keep coming each day.

The chief doesn't know exactly how many Mozambicans are there because they're still arriving. When people tried to reach Nsanje District Commissioner Dominic Mwandira, he didn't answer his phone.
