Mozilla tests integration of Perplexity AI as optional search engine in Firefox

Mozilla is experimenting with adding Perplexity AI as an alternative search engine in Firefox. Users in the U.S., U.K., and Germany may see this option in their browser. Perplexity will then become one of the choices when switching between search engines.

Mozilla says it is conducting an experiment to integrate Perplexity as an alternative search engine, starting with Firefox 139 and currently targeting a subset of users in the U.S., U.K., and Germany.

Additionally, Mozilla highlights the option to use Perplexity via the search bar. This feature, available in Firefox since May, allows users to search specific websites in the address bar, and then, instead of pressing enter, click " Search with Perplexity. " The option to add Perplexity as a search engine will then appear.

In practice, users included in the experiment will see Perplexity AI in the dropdown menu of search engines next to the address bar. It does not replace the default search engine but serves as an additional option. Alternative search engines, such as Ecosia, or websites, like Wikipedia, have been present in that dropdown for some time, but this marks the first instance of an AI tool being integrated into the browser in this manner.

According to Mozilla, this is a pilot aimed at providing users "more choice in their search behavior." "If the experience is positive, we may explore integrating more AI answers or search options in the future," the company states.
