Mzuzu magistrates freed MP Yeremiah Chihana on bail today after his Tuesday arrest by anti-corruption officials. The Mzimba North lawmaker faces two abuse of office and one count of failing to declare an interest.
ACB prosecutor Daniel Nyasulu told the court Chihana misused Constituency Development Fund money. Officials want him to enter his plea alongside M'mbelwa District Council staff. Arrest warrants exist for these additional suspects, though they remain free.
Defense attorney Wapona Kita argued authorities had no reason to keep holding his client. Magistrate Clemence Chamwenda agreed but set strict conditions. Chihana paid K1 million cash, with another person providing K10 million security. He must surrender travel documents and check in with ACB offices every two weeks.
Chihana has openly criticized President Chakwera for years. In 2022, he made headlines by claiming K30 billion went missing from the K188 billion Affordable Inputs Program budget. He said he had proof of this theft from government funds meant for poor farmers.
