A disagreement has arisen between two politicians in Kisii County, Kenya. Silvanus Osoro, who represents South Mugirango in Parliament, has denied Senator Richard Onyonka's claims about an invitation to a New Year's Eve dinner.
President William Ruto is hosting the dinner at the Kisii State Lodge. Senator Onyonka said he turned down an invite to the event, but Mr. Osoro said he was in charge of giving out the invitations and implied that Senator Onyonka was not on the guest list.
Mr. Osoro said he is still looking for Senator Onyonka's invitation card. He doesn't understand which invitation the Senator has refused. "That's not from the State Lodge. It hasn't reached him. I'm still searching for it on the list!" Mr. Osoro stated.
Last week, Gusii leaders met with President Ruto at the State House. They talked about the recent crisis involving people being taken away. Senator Onyonka brought up issues related to housing and health care at this meeting.
Mr. Osoro said there wasn't much room at the State Lodge to invite more people. President Ruto decided to invite only a few guests, like former governor James Ongwae and Stephen Manoti.
Senator Onyonka explained why he said no to the dinner invite. He feels that 2024 has been a very hard and sad year for Kenyans. He said the country is ending the year "at a very low point."
The Senator mentioned the people being taken, corruption, and rights being violated, especially for young Kenyans. "It's sad to remember our past. It means Kenya is going back to how things used to be. History does repeat itself," he said.
Senator Onyonka doesn't feel right about some people being happy and excited when other Kenyan families are in pain. During this time, they are looking for their loved ones to be with but can't find them.
The Senator stated, "Because of my strong feelings on these issues, I will not go to the State New Year's Eve Dinner at the Kisii State Lodge on Tuesday evening, December 31, 2024, as the Senator of Kisii County. I am saying no to the invitation."
Senator Onyonka stressed that being faithful to the Constitution is very important for all Kenyans.
