Mpofu hits back at baseless corruption claims

Prominent constitutional attorney Thabani Mpofu attributes an anonymous corruption complaint to retaliation over his sustained criticism of judicial misconduct. Through legal representative Admire Rubaya, Mpofu and his brother Skumbuzo challenged the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission to dismiss allegations claiming a conflict of interest between the advocate and High Court Justice Munangati-Manongwa.

The unsigned submission suggested impropriety because Mpofu received briefs from the judge's former practice for subsequent hearings before her bench. Rubaya countered that records show the sole matter involving Mpofu never reached Justice Munangati-Manongwa for adjudication, while the jurist severed all commercial ties upon elevation to the High Court.

The attorneys characterized the complaint as an evidence-free smear campaign by adversaries lacking the courage for confrontation. They questioned whether former prosecutors or government counsel should face blanket recusal from state-related cases under similar logic.
