MPs snag residential stands as one time perk

MPs from recent parliaments started getting residential land under a government plan created for their welfare. These legislators must pay for the stands but at reduced prices. The benefit happens only once as part of their service package. This program began back in 2013 through teamwork between Local Government Ministry officials and Parliament leaders. The stands come from urban areas plus places just outside cities.

The government has given MPs other benefits beyond just land parcels. These include car loans and better office equipment for constituency work. Additional support comes through development funds that help local projects. Zanu PF chief whip Togarepi mentioned that this saves money because fewer MPs need hotel stays. Local Government Minister Garwe announced 70 stands went to current and former lawmakers earlier this month.

The stands are located in the Killarney, Penrose, and Mabelreign areas, with most located in Harare. Since starting 12 years ago, over 250 residential plots have been given to parliamentarians across Zimbabwe. This program matches similar housing programs aimed at civil servants, war veterans, young people, and women. Constitutional requirements require the government to provide these housing opportunities to various groups.
