MR44 Freeway Opens Linking Swakopmund to Walvis Bay

The MR44 freeway between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay opened Friday when President Nangolo Mbumba cut the ribbon. People call it the Hifikepunye Pohamba Freeway or sometimes just the road behind Dune 7. This upgraded dual-carriage road runs 42 kilometers along the coast, connecting the two beach towns and helping create jobs for local folks.

President Mbumba talked about how former leader Pohamba fought hard to free Namibia from colonial control. He mentioned that Pohamba's brave actions during liberation struggles inspired many citizens who came after him. The president hopes this important highway keeps Pohamba's name alive for future generations who travel between these coastal cities.

The construction team spent N$150 million buying materials and services from nearby businesses. Around 650 workers earned paychecks during the building phase, putting money right back into the local economy. Mbumba explained that supporting area businesses and hiring local people formed a central part of the project plan from day one.

Construction crews have already started the second phase, which extends the dual lanes all the way to the Walvis Bay traffic circle. Workers made good progress on this additional section of road. Drivers should expect the entire project to be finished around the middle of next year, creating a smooth four-lane journey between both coastal towns that boost regional business connections.
