MTN Drops Solar Tech Bombs on South Sudan Camps

MTN South Sudan just finished helping more than 40,000 people connect to the digital world through their yearly volunteer program. The telecom company spent three weeks during June bringing internet access and smartphones to four struggling communities. Workers built solar-powered computer centers at refugee camps and displacement sites around the country. The program targeted places like Gorom Refugee Camp and Mangaten camp where thousands of people live without basic technology. Company volunteers trained local residents on mobile banking and internet skills during the entire campaign.

The mobile network operator handed out 100 smartphones to family leaders and taught them how to use digital money services. Tech hubs came equipped with computers, charging stations, and reliable internet connections for community members. Teachers and students learned about online education platforms that give access to research materials and learning tools. Local people can start small businesses and earn money through mobile payment systems. Digital literacy workshops created technology champions within each community to help neighbors learn new skills.

A 22-year-old student at Mangaten camp said internet access helps her submit school assignments on time and avoid missing scholarship deadlines. Another refugee mentioned not having to choose between buying sugar and charging her phone anymore thanks to the free charging stations. MTN South Sudan's chief executive explained how connecting these communities enables financial services for small businesses and expands learning opportunities. The company focused on reaching the most vulnerable populations who lack basic connectivity services. Mobile health solutions and emergency communication networks became available to families who previously had limited access to these critical services.
