MTN South Africa goes cloud native, old core ghosted

MTN South Africa completed a core network upgrade with Ericsson that delivers faster data speeds and lower latency across the country. The telecommunications company deployed cloud-native packet core functions during the first half of the year under the MTN Unified Cloud Acceleration framework. Engineers achieved a seamless software upgrade without disrupting 2.52 million active user sessions and 40 gigabits per second of data traffic. The deployment marked the first such upgrade in Africa and established new automation standards.

The network expansion added cloud-native policy control capabilities to support fifth-generation wireless services. MTN South Africa upgraded its container infrastructure while managing 2 million active sessions without service interruptions. The technology foundation enables the operator to launch new services and automate internal processes. The partnership between the companies extends more than 30 years, and the modernization supports digital transformation across South Africa.
