Mudavadi wants a referendum, not a throne

A Kenyan official wants to change the constitution, and everyone is fighting about it. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi spoke in Eldoret, defending his idea for a national referendum. He wants to hold that vote at the same time as the general election in 2027. Mudavadi made these comments at a church fundraiser for a late bishop, with Uasin Gishu governor Jonathan Bii, Senator Jackson Mandago, and presidential aide Farouk Kibet present. He says the country needs to fix big governance problems. His plan would address creating a Prime Minister role, establishing an Official Opposition Leader office, and sorting out the two-thirds gender rule. Other issues include managing the Constituency Development Fund and reviewing boundaries. Mudavadi argues a combined vote saves money, boosts turnout, and lets Kenyans decide their future. He insists this is not about him personally.

Critics have called his proposal unconstitutional nonsense. Former Chief Justice David Maraga is a main opponent. Maraga says Mudavadi holds a job the constitution does not recognize, so his push lacks moral authority. Maraga called the whole thing a political theater act. He accused politicians of creating fake crises to grab more power or create new jobs for friends. Maraga warned the hidden goal might be extending presidential term limits. He stated Kenya does not have a constitutional crisis, just a failure to follow the existing rules with any integrity.

Mudavadi shot back at these claims in his Eldoret speech. He dismissed Maraga as misguided. Mudavadi pointed to Maraga's own past actions. He reminded people that Maraga, as Chief Justice, once told former President Uhuru Kenyatta to dissolve Parliament. That demand came after lawmakers failed to enact the gender rule. Mudavadi also cited Maraga's judicial ruling on the CDF kitty. He said those very issues now need fixing through the referendum. Mudavadi framed the debate as a necessary national discussion, not a personal agenda. The argument continues with no clear resolution in sight.
