Muhoozi inspects L-39 Skyfox, Uganda eyes air force upgrade

Uganda's military boss, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, checked out a Czech-made L-39 Skyfox trainer jet at Entebbe as part of the country's air force upgrade plans. The demo came from Aero Vodochody reps who pitched the plane's dual purpose for teaching pilots and light attack missions.

The UPDF wants better training capacity and newer gear to replace old Soviet-era stuff, especially since they're running operations against ADF rebels in Congo. Air Force Commander Lt. Gen. Charles Okidi and other senior officers sat in on the briefing about the turbofan-powered aircraft.

Kainerugaba said the force started with zero aircraft back in guerrilla days, but the modernization push goes beyond just buying planes. The military is working on personnel development and logistics upgrades, while neighboring countries like Kenya and Rwanda also beef up their air capabilities for counter-terrorism work.
