Museveni appoints Rukikaire as Kabale University chancellor

Canon Mathew Rukikaire will lead Kabale University as chancellor after President Yoweri Museveni approved his appointment for a four-year term. The former privatization minister becomes the second person to hold the post at the southwestern institution since it gained public university status. Museveni signed the appointment letter on Friday, October 17, following a recommendation from the university council.

Rukikaire replaces George Mondo Kagonyera, who finished his second term on Monday, April 28, after serving since 2016. Vice Chancellor Joy Constance Kwesiga said officials are organizing an installation ceremony at the Kikungiri Hill campus. Council Chairman Adison Kakuru praised the selection, calling Rukikaire an experienced leader committed to public service.

The university started as a private community project in 2002 before the government took control in 2015. Rukikaire led economic reforms and privatization programs in the 1990s and remains active in business and politics.
