Museveni backs UAE plan for Bukasa inland port

Ugandan leader Yoweri Museveni backed a pitch from UAE investors to build a cargo hub at Bukasa that would speed up shipments heading toward Sudan and Kenya. The Sharjah Chamber delegation explained their inland port concept during a meeting at State Lodge, and Museveni said he wants the thing fast-tracked since better logistics infrastructure cuts costs for traders moving goods across the region.

Uganda pulls in over $10 billion yearly from exports like coffee and gold while dealing with congestion problems on the Northern Corridor route that connects landlocked countries to Mombasa port. The proposed facility would handle customs clearance and storage closer to where stuff gets made or used.

Investors told Museveni they expect to wrap phase one within six months, and the president reminded them to focus on smooth operations instead of loading up fees that hurt business.
