Museveni Calls for African Unity and Self-Sufficiency

Uganda's president taught military officers from Zimbabwe about Africa's need for growth and unity yesterday. President Yoweri Museveni spoke to 22 officers at State Lodge Nakasero about economic change and security. He reminded them that Uganda and Zimbabwe have been friends since the 1980s liberation wars. Robert Mugabe supported Uganda's National Resistance Army during those fights. The two countries continue their strong partnership today.

Museveni explained that Uganda learned important lessons during the 1960s about African politics. Religious and tribal divisions split many African nations back then. The National Resistance Movement asked whether Africans deserved wealth and prosperity. They discovered that prosperity comes from making and selling products rather than asking for help from other countries. Begging and foreign aid cannot create lasting wealth for African nations.

The president said tribalism hurts economic growth because people from the same tribe make similar products. Cattle herders cannot sell cows to other cattle herders from their tribe. This problem led to Uganda's first principle called patriotism. Ugandans must love their country because they need it for economic success. Armies based on tribal divisions cannot protect national security effectively.

Uganda's production grew beyond what local buyers could purchase. This situation created the need for regional customers across Africa. The second principle became pan-Africanism or loving Africa for economic prosperity. Modern technology and machines must replace manual labor to transform African economies. This forms the third principle of socio-economic transformation.

Museveni warned that economic development alone cannot guarantee safety. Advanced nations still faced attacks during World War II despite their progress. Africa needs both economic cooperation and political unity to succeed. Regional federations would strengthen security against outside threats and boost trade between African countries.
