Mutharika fails to name ministers for Agriculture, Trade

President Arthur Peter Mutharika named his initial Cabinet members and government officials under constitutional authority on Saturday night from Capital Hill in Lilongwe. Enoch Kanzingeni Chihana received appointment as second vice president, and George Chaponda will lead the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Joseph Mwanamvekha assumes the Finance portfolio, and Alfred Ruwan Gangata becomes Minister of State and Democratic Progressive Party Vice President for the Central Region.

Lieutenant General George Jafu takes command of the Malawi Defence Force as chief of defence. Justin Saidi becomes chief secretary, and Stuart Ligomeka serves as deputy chief secretary. Richard Luhanga leads the police service as inspector general, with deputies Stain Chaima and Mlowoka Kaira overseeing operations and administration.

The president plans additional appointments for ministries overseeing agriculture and education. Political observers contrast Mutharika's rapid action with predecessor, Lazarus Chakwera, 's delayed Cabinet formation. The administration restructured ministerial portfolios to align with economic recovery objectives and governance reform priorities.
