NBS Bank Rebounds Big with Rabobank Muscle

NBS Bank plc has extended its partnership with Rabobank from the Netherlands. The deal runs through June 2026. Leaders signed the agreement at Rabo Partnership's 35th Anniversary Conference. The two banks started working together informally in 2016 and made it official in 2018.

The partnership targets four main areas: food and agriculture finance, energy transition, data management, and credit process improvements. CEO Temwani Simwaka says international teamwork helps rural finance grow in developing markets. Rabobank's technical skills have helped NBS Bank change dramatically over recent years. The Dutch bank helped fix IT systems and launch agency banking services.

NBS Bank has completely turned around since the partnership started. The bank went from almost failing to becoming one of Malawi's most profitable institutions. Major wins include creating an Agribusiness Department and rolling out Agency Banking to rural areas. The bank also started digital payment systems for tea and macadamia farmers.

The renewed deal aims to speed up digital changes and improve data handling. Executive mentorship programs will help develop leadership skills. Rabobank CEO David Gerbrands says the partnership shows growing confidence in building expertise. Both banks want to create better financial access for small farmers and businesses across Malawi.
