NDLEA seizes 4 tonnes of drugs in Adamawa, arrests 583 suspects

Drug enforcement officers captured four tons of illegal substances across Adamawa State over the past year. The Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency announced these results Wednesday during International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking ceremonies. State Commander Aliyu Abubakar reported his teams found marijuana, methamphetamine, Tramadol and other banned drugs weighing nearly 4,000 kilograms. Officers arrested 583 people during this period with most suspects being men. Courts convicted 225 drug criminals and ordered them to pay over one million naira to federal authorities.

Police took away six cars used for moving drugs around the state. Treatment centers helped 53 addicted people recover from their drug problems. Most patients were men though two women also received care. Six people started using drugs again after finishing treatment programs. The agency worked with state officials to create Operation Farauta which targets criminals connected to drug abuse.

New synthetic drugs pose serious threats to community safety according to law enforcement leaders. Dealers sell dangerous cannabis mixed with formaldehyde and glass pieces that harm users. Many people abuse Tramadol because they cannot afford other drugs. Medical workers see more cases of mental illness and heart problems caused by drug use. Violence rates have risen among people who take these substances regularly.
