Newcastle's £40m bid for Marc Guehi follows transfer failures

Newcastle United prepares to submit a formal bid for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi during this transfer period. The Times reports the Magpies will propose up to £40 million for the 25-year-old England defender. This move represents Newcastle's attempt to address previous summer recruitment setbacks. Crystal Palace demands £50 million for their center-back amid competition from Liverpool and other top clubs. The London side faces pressure to sell before Guehi's contract expires next summer.

Guehi's current deal contains just 12 months remaining, creating urgency for Palace executives. The club risks losing their captain without compensation if he departs as a free agent in 2026. Last season saw the defender feature in 44 matches across all competitions for Palace. His contributions yielded three goals and two assists during that campaign. Newcastle views the England international as the solution to their defensive reinforcement needs.
