Ng'onga Land Clash Boils Over Low Compensation

The fight over land between Ng'onga people, Balaka officials, and Portland Cement has turned violent. Local families claim they never got fair payment for their property when the cement company took it. Many talks failed to fix this problem, making everyone angry and frustrated about the situation.

Recently, Ng'onga residents blocked trucks at the cement factory during a protest. Police came to break it up, which led to people getting hurt, some going to jail, and property being damaged. The Balaka Civil Society Organisations Network jumped in to help calm things down between all sides.

"We feel worried about the growing violence and how little progress has been made," said Hariex Chimutu, who leads the Balaka Civil Society Organisation. He asked everyone to find a fair answer without fighting. His group has tried to start talks among all the people involved in this messy situation.

The network met with police leaders to discuss peaceful ways to handle protesters. They also had an emergency talk with council leaders to speed up solving the land problem. As things remain tense, the network keeps asking for peace and fairness, saying that protecting public spaces matters and that fights should be settled through talking, not violence.
