Nigeria Floods Kill 150 As Homes Vanish

Flash floods swept through central Nigeria and killed more than 150 people during Wednesday and Thursday. The disaster destroyed 265 homes and washed away two bridges near Mokwa town. Emergency crews found bodies floating 10 kilometers downstream from the worst damage areas. President Bola Tinubu ordered search teams and military forces to help rescue survivors. Officials expect the death count to rise as more victims remain missing.

Torrential rains caused buildings to collapse and roads to flood throughout the rural market town. Rescue workers searched through debris as water continued flowing around damaged structures. Mohammed Tanko lost 15 family members when his childhood home crumbled during the storm. Emergency teams need heavy equipment to remove bodies trapped under fallen buildings. One family of 12 people had only four survivors accounted for after the flooding ended.

Nigeria faces severe flooding every year during its six-month rainy season. Climate change creates more extreme weather patterns that worsen the annual disasters. Poor drainage systems and homes built on waterways make flooding damage much worse. Government weather experts had warned 15 states about possible flash floods before the disaster struck. Last year flooding killed over 1,200 people and displaced 1.2 million residents across the country.
