NPP Official Challenges UDP Youth Leader's Claims on Gambian Progress.
A senior member of Gambia's ruling National People's Party (NPP) has disputed recent statements made by the opposition UDP's National Youth President about the country's current state.
NPP executive Essa Dampha rejected UDP youth leader Hagie Suwaneh's assessment, pointing to several government achievements since 2017. Dampha said President Adama Barrow's administration has created opportunities for youth across public and private sectors.
"The government plans to create 150,000 jobs between 2022 and 2027 through private sector partnerships," Dampha said. He noted that new government institutions and businesses show this initiative's success. The Trade Ministry will release employment data soon.
The government has built Technical Vocational Education Training centers nationwide to address youth unemployment. These centers aim to transform job seekers into job creators through skills training.
A new University of Applied Sciences, Engineering, and Technology campus in Brikama will open next month. This institution will focus on developing local scientists and engineers.
Dampha highlighted The Gambia's lower basic commodity prices compared to neighboring countries. He cited rice prices as an example, with Gambian prices at D1980 versus D2000 in Senegal.
The NPP official challenged Suwaneh to list UDP achievements during their coalition period from 2017 to 2019. During this time, UDP members held key positions, including offices in foreign affairs, Finance, and Vice President.
"Your party controlled major government posts and led seven administrative councils," Dampha said. He asked for specific examples of UDP policies that improved agriculture or reduced youth unemployment during their tenure.
