NRM to Court Over Disputed Kawempe North Vote

The National Resistance Movement isn't letting go of the Kawempe North election drama. After losing to Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola from the National Unity Platform, party leaders are fighting back with every legal weapon they can muster.

Communication director Emmanuel Dombo says their investigation isn't over. The March 13 election saw Nalukoola win with 17,764 votes against NRM candidate Faridah Nambi's 8,593. But the NRM isn't accepting defeat quietly. They're claiming something fishy happened during the voting.

President Yoweri Museveni's party believes NUP supporters created chaos at polling stations. They're particularly upset about 14 polling stations where votes were canceled. According to their calculations, around 50,000 registered voters might have been shut out of the democratic process.

Party leaders have ordered their legal team to prepare a court challenge. Richard Todwong, the NRM secretary-general, wants a full forensic audit of the election. They think the canceled votes could flip the entire result if counted differently.

The controversy deepened when conflicting results appeared in the Uganda Gazette. The numbers published on March 24 didn't match what the returning election officer originally announced. NRM sees these discrepancies as another reason to challenge the outcome.

Dombo remains hopeful. He believes the ongoing investigations might prove their candidate was unfairly defeated. The party wants every vote scrutinized and is waiting for the final official report before filing their legal petition.

The election attracted multiple candidates from different political parties. Small parties like the Democratic Party, the Forum for Democratic Change, and the People's Progressive Party also fielded candidates. However, the real battle was between NUP and NRM.

Uganda's political landscape continues to simmer with tension. The Kawempe North by-election has become a microcosm of larger political struggles. NRM's determination to challenge the results shows how high the stakes are in local electoral contests.
