The national wrestling trials are happening after a big championship got postponed. The Nigeria Wrestling Federation set the trials for January 6th at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State. This move replaces the canceled 4th Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Championship, which was delayed indefinitely following the death of Bayelsa State's deputy governor. The federation secretary, Oluwasegun Bode Ademisoro, stated the trials aim to ensure fair and merit-based selection for the 2026 national team.
Only four women's weight classes will compete in this trial: 53kg, 57kg, 62kg, and 67kg. Each category will feature the top four wrestlers based on past performances in major events like the National Sports Festival. The federation named the invited athletes for each class, including names like Ogunsanya Christiana and Esther Kolawole. A new date for the postponed ranking championship will be announced later to decide on other weight categories.
