Water Company Must Pay for Breaking a Building.
A judge named Cornelia made a big decision about a broken building in Kampala city. She said the National Water Company needs to pay money because they damaged someone's building when they were fixing water pipes.
The building belonged to a company called Mugalaasi. They were very upset when their building became unsafe because of the water company's work. The workers dug holes really close to the building, just one meter away. This made part of the building fall, and nobody could live or work there anymore.
Mugalaasi asked for money from both the water company and the city council. They wanted money to tear down the broken building, build a new one, and make up for all the rent money they lost. The building was torn down in January 2020 because it became dangerous.
The judge looked at pictures and listened to people talk about what happened. She decided the water company should have been more careful when they were digging near the building. Even though the building was old, the judge said the water company still needed to work safely around it.
The city council did not have to pay any money because the judge said they did not cause the damage. The judge decided the water company must pay 813 million shillings. This was less money than Mugalaasi wanted because their building was already old and had some cracks before it was damaged.
The water company must also pay extra money, called interest, until it finishes paying everything it owes. This will help Mugalaasi build a new building and recover some of the money it lost when its building was broken.
