Nyabinde Sons Lead Jazz Tribute at Sherwood Golf Club

Jazz fans plan to meet at Sherwood Golf Club in Mabelreign, Harare, this Saturday. They'll celebrate the memory of Bob "Headmaster" Nyabinde through music and dancing. The famous musician passed away on December 23, 2023, at 68 years old after fighting a long battle with a stroke. His musical legacy continues through his talented sons Albert and Agga Nyabinde who make waves on the local music scene.

Agga leads The 2 Nice Band, and his older brother Albert teaches music and plays with different groups. The brothers perform together whenever Albert has free time. They'll play for jazz lovers at the weekend event alongside veteran singer Victor Kunonga, who was close friends with their dad. Popular jazz performer Prudence Katomeni-Mbofana adds her talents to the lineup as many friends and fans plan to attend.

Agga organized the program and asked his musical friends to join him in honoring his father. "We decided to hold a special event remembering my father at Sherwood in Harare," he said. I've performed there before, but this time, we invite fellow musicians, fans of my late father, and the entire jazz community to celebrate with us. Everyone knows what my father did for music and how close he stayed to other musicians his age. He mentored many people."

Despite his job as an administrator with the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, Agga remains committed to performing. "I might work as an administrator, but I remain a musician who should perform for fans. I love standing on stage, but on Saturday, I'll wear two hats—musician and coordinator. We hope fans come in large numbers to make this celebration worthwhile." He promised many surprises and powerful performances from popular Zimbabwean jazz artists.

"I invited big names from jazz circles like Mono Mukundu to attend this event. Musical performances will fill the day under one roof," Agga explained. A similar gathering happened last year in Kwekwe, where journalist Munyaradzi Huni released a book about Nyabinde at Gulez Gardens. The biography titled "The Headmaster With a Guitar: Bob Nyabinde" told the story of the beloved jazz master who captured many hearts.

Famous for classics such as "Chabuda Hapana," "Pane Nyaya," "Zvibingaidzo," and "Samanyika," Nyabinde wrote songs that commented on society. Fellow artists Mono Mukundu, Kireni Zulu, Stevie "Dhongi" Makoni, and Kunonga attended the previous celebration. Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi's wife, Daisy, also came to that event, where Sports Ministry Secretary Nicholas Moyo served as guest of honor.

Music promoter Josh Hozheri helped organize the previous tribute since he worked closely with Nyabinde for years. Everything stands ready for Saturday's celebration, where jazz lovers will enjoy themselves. The strong lineup guarantees a great night at Sherwood Golf Club. Kunonga brings years of performance experience, Katomene-Mbofana needs no introduction, Mono brings veteran skills, and the Nyabinde brothers follow their father's musical path.

The brothers learned from the best and stayed strong despite losing their father. They had the advantage of starting music careers during their father's lifetime. People who want copies of Nyabinde's biography can ask Agga about availability. Merchandise will be sold at the event to support his sons and their upcoming foundation. Family friend Hozheri plans to attend what might become a mini-jazz festival.

Jazz enthusiasts have waited for such events and will welcome this opportunity. It happens during a time when jazz supporters want to revive the genre locally. Known for attracting mature audiences, jazz attracts big spenders who value musicians. The genre remains relevant in Zimbabwe, though it faces challenges from a lack of funding, proper venues, and music promoters.
