Odhiambo fires Kenya past DR Congo as Sh1B CHAN prize looms

Austin Odhiambo propelled Harambee Stars ahead against the Democratic Republic of Congo during their 2024 CAF African Nations Championship opener at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The midfielder struck late in the opening period, sending thousands of supporters into wild celebration. Kenya entered halftime with a 1-0 advantage over the two-time tournament winners from 2009 and 2016. The match represented the nation's return to continental competition after an extended absence. Fans witnessed more than a sporting contest as the team sought to restore national football pride.

President William Ruto established record financial incentives before the tournament began. Players earn one million shillings per victory and 500,000 shillings for draws. The squad receives 600 million shillings if they capture the championship title. Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko added 400 million shillings to the prize pool. These combined rewards total one billion shillings, representing the largest cash incentive ever offered to a Kenyan national team.
