Oluwo Hits Back at Judge Over Controversial Kingship Remarks

A powerful Nigerian king has fired back at a high court judge who said traditional rulers must accept ancient burial customs. The Oluwo of Iwoland slammed Justice Phillips Akinside after the judge made controversial comments about kingship at a recent legal lecture. Akinside had argued that once someone becomes king through traditional ceremonies, they cannot reject customary burial practices when they die. The royal leader called these remarks offensive and wrong. He said the judge clearly does not grasp cultural basics.

The monarch made it clear that no religion can force its ways on any king. He pointed out that following traditions does not mean worshipping ancient gods. The ruler also noted that other ethnic groups like the Igbos have similar deity practices, making it unfair to single out Yoruba culture. He accused the judge of trying to drag the traditional system backwards. The king warned that royal leaders will fight any attempts to disrespect their institutions.

The Oluwo praised leaders in Ogun State for protecting kings from harmful traditional practices. He said these officials make sure even dead rulers can follow their chosen religion without forced customs. The monarch wants other states in southwestern Nigeria to copy this approach. He called for changes to outdated practices that hurt traditional leadership. The king believes modern times require new thinking about royal customs and religious freedom.
