Kenya's Open College Grows Past Its Borders.
Kenya's newest college teaches students from many lands, says school leader Caroline Omulando. The Open University of Kenya has more than 2,500 students after just 16 months.
The school started in August 2023 after President William Ruto supported it. Omulando shared this news at a special meeting about online learning between Kenya and China.
The meeting took place at Konza Technopolis, a new city 64 kilometers south of Nairobi. Three schools—the Open University of Kenya, Donghua University, and the Open University of China—came together there.
These schools want to improve learning through computers. They plan to build new learning places in Kenya and China. Omulando thinks this teamwork will help more students learn at her school.
"This work fits our school's aims very well," Omulando said. Through this new plan with China, she believes the school can reach students across East Africa and beyond.
The schools will create new courses together, which will help people learn what they need to in today's world. The Chinese school, which teaches four million students, will show the Kenyan school how to grow bigger.

Dr. Catherine Kagichia runs student records at the school. She said students come from 18 different lands, including Switzerland, the Netherlands, Nigeria, and Ghana. The school wants to make learning open to all, easy to pay for, and good quality.
The school is located in an area shared by three parts of Kenya: Machakos, Makueni, and Kajiado. It hopes to spread learning far beyond Kenya's borders.
