Operation Dudula blocks Zims, medics step in

Zimbabwean medical practitioners working in South Africa have established volunteer services for compatriots denied access to government healthcare facilities. The Operation Dudula movement blocks foreign nationals from receiving treatment at state hospitals and clinics. Movement members argue that immigrants consume resources meant for South African taxpayers. Healthcare workers and advocacy groups caution that these restrictions threaten patient safety and undermine progress against diseases like HIV and tuberculosis. Forty volunteer health professionals from Zimbabwe provide medical care to migrants who are being held.

The volunteer group has already assisted over 2,000 Zimbabwean patients, according to their representative based in Johannesburg. Resource shortages threaten the sustainability of these emergency medical services. One policy expert describes the volunteer efforts as essential humanitarian work. Approximately one million Zimbabweans currently reside and work throughout South Africa. Medical professionals continue their volunteer services despite facing significant financial and logistical challenges.
