Oscar's pick Homebound tanks in India, ignored by fans

Film critic Ramachandran Srinivasan blamed the brief runtime for poor domestic performance of Homebound. The Oscar-nominated drama starring Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor earned approximately 750,000 rupees during opening shows Friday. Theater programmers allocated fewer screens based on weak audience response and limited buzz around the release. Multiplexes prioritized films with stronger box office potential over the 64-minute feature.

The entertainment analyst compared the movie's reception to Lunchbox, which succeeded both domestically and internationally despite lacking major stars. Homebound struggled in global markets more than local theaters, failing to meet industry expectations. Srinivasan emphasized that insufficient promotional campaigns hurt ticket sales when audiences remain unaware of new releases. The critic noted that filmmakers face increasing challenges attracting viewers amid numerous streaming options and competing theatrical releases.
