Otti orders teacher promotions reset to 60% pass mark

A state governor just overruled his own education board to side with frustrated teachers. Abia State Governor Alex Otti ordered the basic education board and civil service commission to process promotions for every teacher who scored at least sixty percent on their exams, reversing a sudden hike to a seventy-five percent pass mark. The directive came after a citizen's complaint about the change, which Otti criticized as unfair since the original sixty percent threshold was advertised before testing even began.

Otti confirmed he gave the order just before Christmas, promising adjusted promotions and corresponding salary updates would be announced soon. Separately, he highlighted a separate infrastructure win, noting his administration restored power to over thirty communities in Ukwa West after a nine-year blackout, with ongoing work to bring electricity back to Ohafia and Bende areas. The move frames his governance as directly interventionist on both bureaucratic fairness and basic public utilities.
