Over 1 million apply for 5,500 SAPS trainee spots

South African authorities are processing applications from more than 330,000 university graduates seeking positions among 5,500 trainee slots at police academies nationwide. Police spokesperson Amanda Van Wyk confirmed that evaluation sessions continue across all nine provinces after the department received over one million submissions. Candidates holding credentials in law enforcement, legal studies, and forensic science receive priority consideration during the screening process.

Successful applicants will begin a 21-month training program in 2026 at facilities throughout the country. Trainees receive R4,500 monthly during classroom instruction before advancing to field probation with annual compensation of R186,483. Officers earn R238,629 per year upon completing the full course and receiving permanent constable status.

Requirements mandate South African citizenship for individuals between the ages of 18 and 35 with secondary school diplomas. Applicants must demonstrate fitness through medical examinations and possess clean criminal histories. Valid driving permits and university qualifications at level six or above strengthen candidacy for specialized divisions such as crime intelligence and investigative units.
