Pakistan's Zimbabwe military pact falters as Ambassador Baseer exits

Ambassador Murad Baseer concludes his three-year diplomatic mission in Zimbabwe after successfully reviving bilateral relations between Pakistan and Harare. The envoy met with Acting Foreign Affairs Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri to review progress across the defense, health, trade, and education sectors. Pakistan established its embassy in Harare six months after Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980, demonstrating an early commitment to the relationship. Both nations have maintained strong diplomatic ties throughout the decades since Zimbabwe's liberation. The partnership has expanded beyond traditional diplomatic channels into practical cooperation areas.

Pakistan contributed substantially to Zimbabwe's military development by training over 400 pilots who serve domestically and internationally. Pakistani medical professionals have worked within Zimbabwe's public healthcare system, while educational scholarships have supported Zimbabwean students since 1980. The Air Force of Zimbabwe received significant support from Pakistani expertise during its formation period. Defense cooperation remains a cornerstone of the bilateral relationship between the two countries. Academic exchanges have strengthened through programs at the Zimbabwe National Defence University.

Ministers from both nations expressed commitment to formalizing a memorandum of understanding despite ongoing negotiations. The agreement would codify cooperation frameworks across multiple sectors. Both countries share similar positions at international forums and provide mutual diplomatic support. Muchinguri-Kashiri praised the ambassador's contributions to strengthening ties between the two nations. Future collaboration will build upon the foundation established during Baseer's tenure.
