Pastor mistakes son for intruder in Bulawayo shooting

Police officers charged River of Life pastor Bothwell Phiri with attempted murder after he fired at his kid by mistake. The 57-year-old dad shot his 29-year-old son Jordan when the young man tried to climb through a window at their Kumalo home in Bulawayo. Jordan arrived from a plot he visited in Esigodini around 1:20 AM on March 17 but found all doors locked. He decided the window seemed his best way inside.

Bothwell fired his gun because he thought someone wanted to break into their house. The bullet hit Jordan in the groin area. Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said once the father realized his terrible error, he quickly drove Jordan to United Bulawayo Hospitals for treatment. Medical staff confirmed Jordan remains stable despite his wounds.

When officers questioned Bothwell about what happened that night, he explained he believed a stranger tried forcing entry into their home. Msebele described the shooting as an unfortunate circumstance between father and son. Police checked records during their investigation and confirmed Bothwell legally owns the firearm he used during the incident.

The charges reflect the serious nature of the shooting, even though Bothwell claims he mistook Jordan for a dangerous intruder. Law enforcement continues looking into exactly what happened before making final decisions about the case against the church leader. Jordan stays under medical care as he recovers from injuries caused by his father during those early morning hours.
