Pastor mistakes son for intruder, shoots him in Bulawayo

A church leader from Bulawayo faces attempted murder charges after he shot his son at home. Bothwell Phiri, who started River of Life International Church, fired at 29-year-old Jordan when the young man tried to climb through a window on March 17. The 57-year-old dad thought someone was breaking into his Kumalo home. He rushed Jordan to United Bulawayo Hospitals right after he realized his mistake.

Police official Nomalanga Msebele talked about what happened. She said Jordan remains stable at the hospital. She also mentioned that Bothwell has all the proper papers for his gun. The news spread fast on social media, where people argued about the shooting. Some folks think the pastor acted without thinking first.

One user named @NomusaDube wrote that Bothwell should have fired into the air as a warning before shooting directly at the person. Another person with the username @Duke of GK defended the pastor. This user claimed that having a gun for protection doesn't mean someone lacks faith in God.

The case raises questions about home security and how people react when they feel threatened. Many families struggle with similar fears about break-ins across Zimbabwe. The shooting happened during nighttime hours when visibility was poor. Jordan survived, but police still charged his father because of the serious nature of the incident.
