Penang deputy chief minister withdraws defamation suit over Batu Kawan land deal controversy

Dr. P. Ramasamy dropped his defamation case against Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at Sessions Court today. Judge Helmi Ghani recorded the consent judgment after Ramasamy's lawyer informed the court his client would not refile. The former deputy chief minister had sued Chow over a Facebook post from October 2023 that allegedly damaged his reputation. Ramasamy's legal team confirmed the permanent withdrawal through lawyer Shamsher Thind Singh. Chow's representation came from lawyer A. Ruebankumar.

The Penang Development Corporation simultaneously withdrew its defamation suit against Ramasamy over the same matter. Both parties agreed to drop their cases without any cost orders. The dispute centered on a canceled land transaction between PDC and Umech Land Sdn Bhd. The controversial deal involved 226 hectares in Byram, Batu Kawan that critics claimed sold below market value. Ramasamy also agreed to retract his previous statements about the PDC as part of the settlement.
