Petition Seeks to Disqualify Moses Ali from Election

A lawyer wants to stop an elderly politician from running for parliament because of health concerns. Kakwenza Rukirabashaija filed court papers against Moses Ali who served as finance minister under Idi Amin. The petition claims Ali cannot think clearly or move around well enough to do the job. Ali appeared at party headquarters and stayed in his car during nomination because he could not walk to the tent.

The court filing says the constitution bars people with mental problems from serving in parliament. Kakwenza argues that Ali cannot debate laws or represent voters properly anymore. The lawyer cited rules that require the election commission to reject candidates who do not meet basic requirements. Ali looked very weak and had trouble breathing when reporters saw him recently.

Minister Balaam Barugahara supports Ali and posted messages praising his dedication despite health problems. The minister plans to campaign for the veteran politician in his home district. Kakwenza warns that voters lose their rights when candidates cannot perform essential duties. The petition targets the election commission and attorney general along with Ali himself.

Courts must decide whether Ali can continue his political career or step aside for health reasons. Election officials have not commented on the legal challenge against the longtime lawmaker. Judges will schedule hearings to review the case against Ali soon.
