Petrol prices rise as diesel drops in October

South African petrol prices will rise modestly in October, but diesel costs will decline, Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe announced. The price of 93 unleaded petrol increases by 1 cent per liter, and 95 unleaded rises by 8 cents starting at midnight. Diesel with 0.05 percent sulphur content decreases by 10 cents, and 0.005 percent sulphur diesel falls by 8 cents.

International fuel price fluctuations and the rand's strengthening against the dollar from R17.73 to R17.49 drove the monthly adjustments. The petrol price structure includes a 6.1 cent per liter increase to accommodate wage raises for forecourt employees following an agreement signed on Aug. 23. Inland prices reach R21.48 for 93 unleaded and R21.63 for 95 unleaded, and coastal prices stand at R20.69 and R20.80 respectively.
