A police detective from Plumtree faces extortion charges after demanding $1,000 from a robbery suspect to drop prosecution. Detective Constable Collen Mwoyo appeared in a Bulawayo court this week and was granted $200 bail, with orders to report daily to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission offices. His trial resumes on Monday.
Prosecutors say Mwoyo arrested Andrew Munemo, a project manager at Posse Solutions Private Limited Company, on September 23 for robbery before releasing him and arresting him again five days later. The detective allegedly collected $500 initially and another $200 after taking Munemo to meet prosecutors at Plumtree Magistrate Courts. When Munemo failed to pay the remaining balance, Mwoyo threatened him with jail and took him to court on October 10 for an initial remand hearing.
Anti-corruption investigators arrested Mwoyo on October 13 at Bellevue Shopping Centre after Munemo reported the demands and authorities set a trap. Officers caught the detective accepting $120 from the complainant. Magistrate Richard Ramaboea barred Mwoyo from interfering with state witnesses and required him to stay at his registered address.
