Authorities in Nsangi Division detained three men suspected of leading a machete-armed criminal group that had been attacking local communities. Officers identified the individuals as Niwagaba Shaban, Turinawe Eddie, and Kawakki Sulaiman.
Patrick Onyango, who speaks for Kampala Metropolitan Police with the rank of senior superintendent, said murder and aggravated robbery charges were filed against Niwagaba and Turinawe. Kawakki faces accusations of holding items believed to have been taken unlawfully. Police say Kawakki ran a business in central Kampala where he purchased and sold stolen cellphones. A search of his establishment turned up multiple handsets that investigators think were acquired through theft.
Law enforcement officials believe breaking up this criminal network will provide safety for people living in Nsangi and nearby communities. The three men remain behind bars and will face a magistrate next week.
