Police hunt for suspects after attack on minister's vehicle in Rubanda

Police officers are hunting down troublemakers who attacked a government minister's car with rocks. The attackers smashed the windows of Finance Minister Henry Musasizi's vehicle on Thursday evening around 6:40 pm. The incident happened at Hakashanje Playground in Nyakahanga village right after Musasizi finished speaking at a campaign event. Angry people threw stones at the minister's convoy as he tried to leave the area. Security guards had to fire warning shots into the air to scatter the hostile crowd.

Musasizi serves as the current Member of Parliament for Rubanda East and wants to win a fourth term in office. He spent the day campaigning with district chairman Stephen Kasyaba who also seeks another term. Police spokesman Elly Maate confirmed that officers are investigating the attack as property damage. Earlier that day, some residents had already torn down Musasizi's campaign posters around town. The attackers' reasons for the violence remain unknown to authorities.

The minister faces a tough primary election battle against former district chairman Jogo Kenneth Biryabarema. These two politicians have fought bitter campaigns before with violent incidents. During the 2021 elections, eight of Biryabarema's supporters were beaten up at a rally after Musasizi's people blocked their access. Biryabarema lost that election but the political feud continues today. Police warn everyone to stay peaceful during campaign season and respect different political opinions.
