Police pounce on MCP attacker ignoring other party assaults

The police caught someone who hurt people from the Malawi Congress Party at Nselema Trading Centre. Many people wonder if the police treat everyone the same way.

Mr. Peter Kalaya from the police said hurting others is against the law. He told people the police were working hard to find everyone who caused trouble. They already caught one person just one day after the fight happened.

Some people feel happy the police acted fast. Other people ask why the police work quickly when the ruling party gets hurt but move slowly when other parties have problems.

Many worry the police might help only the people in power. They think everyone should be treated fairly when bad things happen.

The country has seen many bad attacks in recent times. People from the Democratic Progressive Party were hurt in Lilongwe in February 2024. People from the AFORD party were attacked in the Dowa district. Men with sharp knives stopped peaceful walks against the government. The police say they are still looking for these bad people.

Many upset people wrote messages on Facebook after hearing about the police catching someone for the Machinga fight. Madalitso wrote that police work very fast when ruling party members get hurt but very slowly in other cases.

Charles said people think Malawi has become a police state. He said police can do better work, but someone with power stops the truth. He feels happy they caught someone in one day but sad about other cases being forgotten.

Thabit asked why police find it hard to catch people who hurt others in some places. He believes police should treat all cases the same way.

Dr. George Chaima, who knows about the government, feels sad about the police. He said they listen to what politicians say instead of following the law that treats everyone fairly.

A recent study found many people in Malawi think the police take bribes and need to do their jobs better.
