Pope Leo XIV No More War Plea Shakes Vatican

Pope Leo XIV asked for world peace during his first Sunday talk as head of the Catholic Church. The first American pope spoke to thousands of people at St Peter's Square on May 11. He urged leaders to stop the fighting in Israel and Ukraine. He said all hostages must go free, and people need help with food and medicine. This marked his second public speech since becoming pope.

Leo started his day with a special church service at the tomb of St Peter. Through this ceremony, he connected his work to the early days of the church. The 69-year-old spent many years helping people in Peru as a church worker. Many Latin Americans feel proud that someone who lived among them became pope. He told church leaders he sees himself as just a simple servant of God.

People from around the world came to hear the new pope speak. During his appearance, they waved flags and sang songs. A woman from Peru cried when she saw him address the crowd. Leo must help fix problems inside the church and respond to troubles across the globe. His simple style has already made many Catholics feel hopeful about his leadership.
