Portable PS6 Slated to Outpace Xbox Series S but Trail PS5

The portable version of the PlayStation 6 will likely pack more power than the Xbox Series S but less punch than the standard PS5. Memory bandwidth limitations mean it cannot run PS5 games as smoothly as the original console. Insider Kepler L2 shared these details on NeoGAF forums after someone asked about the handheld's capabilities. Despite being unable to match current-gen base systems, the portable device will definitely handle PS5 games at lower resolutions and frame rates.

The portable PS6 will use a different chip than its home console counterpart. This special processor operates at very low voltages and contains fewer than 36 compute units - less than what powers the base PS5. The portable system-on-chip will be finalized months after the main PS6 chip, suggesting a later release date. Performance estimates remain tricky because the device uses unreleased GPU architecture.

AMD will power the PlayStation 6 family, just like previous PlayStation generations. Intel tried but failed to secure the manufacturing contract. The main PS6 console should arrive between 2027 and 2028, with the portable version possibly launching afterward. Sony has not officially announced any PS6 models or variations yet.
