President Ruto Pays Tribute to Sam Nujoma

Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his condolences Sunday for the passing of Dr. Sam Nujoma, Namibia's founding president and liberation leader, who died Saturday at age 95 in Windhoek.

President Ruto praised Nujoma as a "selfless, courageous, and visionary leader" who devoted his life to Namibia's liberation and development. "We stand in solidarity with the people of Namibia in mourning their founding President," Ruto said, extending his thoughts to Nujoma's family and the Namibian people during their time of grief.

Namibian President Nangola Mbumba announced that Nujoma had spent three weeks in hospital with an illness from which he did not recover. Nujoma emerged as a pivotal figure in Namibian history after founding the South West Peoples' Organisation (Swapo) in the 1960s, which spearheaded the country's independence movement against South African rule.

His leadership culminated in Namibia's independence in 1990 when he became the nation's first president. Nujoma served as head of state until 2005, marking a significant era in Namibian politics. He maintained his influence as leader of the ruling Swapo party until 2007, concluding a remarkable 47-year tenure at the organization's helm.

The death of this prominent African statesman marks the end of an era for Namibia, leaving behind a legacy of liberation struggle and nation-building that shaped modern Namibian history.
