Presidential office in chaos as Marine death probe triggers raids in Seoul

Special Prosecutor Lee Myeong-hyeon sent his team to raid government offices Thursday morning. The investigators hit the defense ministry and the presidential National Security Office hard. They wanted evidence about claims that top military brass and presidential staff messed with a Marine death probe. The team also searched the ministry spokesperson's room and homes of people connected to the case. They grabbed documents and files during the early morning sweep.

The investigation centers on allegations about former President Yoon Suk Yeol getting mad over a military probe. Marine Corporal Chae Su-geun died in July 2023 when flood waters swept him away during a rescue mission. The young soldier was searching for people trapped by heavy rains when the tragedy struck. Military investigators looked into his death but Yoon allegedly hated their findings. The former president reportedly blew up and complained about how they handled the case.

Prosecutors want to get their hands on National Security Office meeting records. The documents might show exactly how angry Yoon got about the Marine investigation results. They also plan to grab defense ministry files about how officials responded to news reports on the death. The materials could prove whether government bigwigs tried to interfere with the military probe. The raid marks another step in the growing investigation into the former president's actions.
