Prison Chiefs Snatch Land to Build Farming Jail

Prison officials secured land at Asante Bekwai Nsuaem for building a new correctional facility during recent talks with local chiefs. DDP James Mwinyelle leads the Ashanti Regional Prisons Command and met with traditional leaders at Dadease Chief's Palace on May 26. The project aims to reduce overcrowding at existing prisons across the region. Officials want to create modern agriculture programs that help inmates learn job skills before release. Community leaders agreed to support the expansion after hearing about potential benefits.

The new facility will feature expanded sleeping areas and vocational training centers for prisoner education. Mwinyelle explained that agriculture commercialization will become a major focus for inmate rehabilitation programs. Retired prison officer James Adu-Mensah Danfoku promised the community would gain better security and new job opportunities. Local businesses expect economic growth from having prison staff and operations nearby. Officials pointed to successful examples like Duayaw Nkwanta Settlement Camp Prison that helped surrounding areas prosper.

Chief Nana Twum Barimah supported the prison project and suggested building a water production plant alongside the correctional facility. The traditional leader wants to create Adum Mineral Water that local people can buy and help sell to others. He urged farmers and landowners to cooperate with prison officials during the development process. The chief visited Central Prison earlier and saw how overcrowded conditions need immediate attention. Several prison officials attended the meeting to discuss technical details about the proposed expansion.
